Throughout the year, ABC Council supports a number of important national and international campaigns which are targeted at reducing waste and increasing sustainability.

Food Waste Action Week

Since 2021, Food Waste Action Week has been connecting businesses, government organisations and global partners to increase awareness amongst citizens about the devastating impact that food waste is having on the planet.

The campaign which is normally held at the start of March, is led by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) organisation and is supported by ABC Council.

Compost Awareness Week

Held at the start of May each year, this campaign provides important information for residents on how to make the most of their brown bins.

With gardening in full swing at this time of year, ABC Council is encouraging residents to pick up some top tips during International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) and find out how they can help combat climate change in the process.

The annual campaign aims to highlight why we all should be composting our organics and using compost to create healthier soil.

Composting is also an effective way of tackling the climate crisis by reducing landfill waste. Thanks to the efforts of local people, thousands of tonnes of food waste and gardening waste is recycled into quality compost each year, which is used in horticulture and to help grow local food produce.

Reuse and Repair Week

An important campaign in the calendar is Reuse and Repair Week, which is held at the beginning of June each year.

ABC Council has helped organise events to celebrate the skills and creativity that exist within our communities.

Reuse and Repair Week is organised by the Northern Ireland Resource Network (NIRN) who have proven that by “choosing to repair rather than replace, we don’t just reduce waste, we build stronger, more connected communities”.

To find out more and get involved – please visit the NIRN website – https://www.nirn.com/

Recycle Week

Each year ABC Council supports Recycle Week, which is Recycle Now’s annual flagship campaign.

Retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to help people recycle more of the right things, more often.

As part of the campaign, ABC Council shares the important messages which are intended to clarify those household items which can cause confusion when it comes to recycling.
