PEACEPLUS Local Action Plan

The creation of the Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council Action Plan has been led by the collaborative efforts of the PEACEPLUS Partnership. The Partnership has worked closely with Council Officers, employing a co-design process that allowed various stakeholders from the Borough, including community organisations, residents, statutory providers, public bodies, and Council staff, and more to provide input into its development. The Action Plan is designed to promote peace and reconciliation throughout the Borough.

The Action Plan contains 43 social, community, cultural and capital projects that will attract engagement across the Borough and from all communities. These vary from ones with a focus on mental health and wellbeing, the environment and outdoors, and sport and recreation to projects aimed at capacity building and community earning.

The overall aim of the programme is to create positive peace and reconciliation outcomes for the Borough and also to promote social, economic and regional stability. It is intended the variety of programmes will contribute to these overall aims. The work will focus on increased levels of cross community participation, relationship building and fostering a shared understanding between people of differing community backgrounds.

Local Regeneration and Transformation
Signature Capital Project Enhancement of play spaces in Keady, Palace Stables, Lawrencetown, Clady, Darkley, Hamiltonsbawn, Mountmorris, Aghagallon, and Loughgall.
City of Armagh RFC Community Advantage Project Enhancing club facilities to provide a

multipurpose, shared, neutral, safe and inclusive space that is accessible to all sections of the local community.

Laurelvale Cricket Club Community Advantage Project Enhancement of club facility that will also help to create cultural, educational, health and wellbeing opportunities and activities.
Aghaderg GAC/New-Bridge College Community Advantage Project A community partnership to develop sports field floodlighting at new school facility in Loughbrickland.
Capacity Building Programme Training to enable organisations/ community groups across the Borough to acquire the skills and knowledge to develop peace building and other projects
Thriving and Peaceful Communities
Mental Health Training Series of training programmes in partnership with the Community Planning Partnership and the Protect Life Implementation Group that will support the agreed Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Training Framework as directed by the PHA.
ABC Crisis Café A café to provide coverage across the entire Southern Trust area, with a specific location to be determined in consultation with PLIG and PIPS.
Volunteer Resilience and Wellbeing programme Training programme to address the issues for volunteers affiliated to VN/C&VB to promote and support self-care and build resilience and coping mechanisms.
Sheds for Life Programme A range of activities and workshops, the programme seeks to enhance the physical and mental health of participants and encourage cross-community connections
Positive Pathways – Reboot your Life Camp Training, skills development, volunteering, and work experience for hard-to-reach youth and adults.
Good to Chat The programme will see the development of chatty benches and associated programmes across a range of facilities.
Social Supermarket Programme Programme to operate as a bridge between traditional food banks and regular retail outlets, with a focus on promoting self-sufficiency and community support.
Community Forums Create seven targeted forums throughout the Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon area.
Community Resilience Programme Programme (with designated officer) to empower communities within the Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council area to become more resilient in the face of various challenges.
Forest Schools Programme Outdoor, nature-based learning project that focuses on the holistic development of the child/adult.  Training for Forest School Leaders and Assistance parallel to Forest School Delivering with children, young people, families, and communities.
Community Growing and Sustainable Lifestyles The programme supports outdoor, nature-based learning that focuses on social interaction and inclusion.  Delivered to children, young people, families, and communities.
Community Engagement Programme Designed to foster thriving and peaceful communities by promoting cross-community activities, outdoor education, and the preservation of local heritage and biodiversity.
GLOW Projects 10-week programme for girls will include physical activity sessions, educational workshops, and art activities
Diversionary Sport Programmes The Weekend Evening Sports Club is an inventive cross-community initiative designed to address rising Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) among 13–17-year-olds
Barge and Play Space Programme. Revitalise provision in the vicinity of Waterside House, Oxford Island.
Age- Friendly Projects Programmes to support older people to engage with other communities from within the ABC Age-Friendly Strategy and Action Plan 2022-2025
Community Restorative Justice Training, education, and awareness of Community Restorative practices for community, statutory and key stakeholders.
Cross Community Volunteer Development Programme A structured and comprehensive training programme to empower volunteers from local community groups to become effective agents of change in their communities.
Sustainable Living Programme – Outdoor Spaces Horticultural, environmental, and conservation activities in outdoor areas – empower participants with practical skills, environmental knowledge, and a deep appreciation for their natural surroundings
Rural Citizenship & Future Leadership Programme Pilot scheme will encompass Kinallen, Garvaghy, Waringsford, Aughnaskeogh, Carnew, and Gransha.
Youth Leadership Projects Project will engage a diverse group of young people aged 16-20 in sports and physical activities.
Young Enterprise Programme Youth Catalyst Programme aims to equip young people from different communities in ABC with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to become successful entrepreneurs
Building Respect for all Cultures and Diversity
Local cultural and heritage awareness projects. History tours; Local heritage projects that focus on place; Research on key historical figures and acknowledging the impact of events;
Online History Lecture & Talk Series on Local, Regional and National Histories Programme will allow participants to engage in learning and dialogue on the significant local and national events, conflicts and their impact today.
Borders, Boundaries, Belonging and Bonds Project Lecture series looks at how physical and psychological borders in Ireland an international can change the mindset of those living in their shadow.
The Great Hunger – The Famine A History Educators Programme to enhance knowledge and confidence among history teachers, and a series of study visits.
Online History Courses on Modern Ireland and Irish History Ten module courses with a focus on the decade 1913-23 and a broader examination of Irish history.
OCN Level 2 Shared History Educational Programme Project will examine historical links between Northern Irish and Poland and other areas of Europe combined with a modern learning approach to gain a wider understanding of shared history.
Events programme – at locations across the Borough and signature sites A series of annual and one-off events and festivals to celebrate cultures, identity and heritage through music, food, sport etc.
Wellbeing Events at Oxford Island Outdoor events to include  exhibits, demonstrations, outdoor activities, live music, local food and workshops and camping.
Battle of the Bands Interclub competition with provision of musical instruments and training, culminating in a yearly Battle of the Bands event.
ABC Community Awards programme Annual scheme and gala awards event that will showcase and celebrate the work and achievements of community groups, volunteers, and individuals.
One Community Programmes focussing on; LGBTQIA+, Disabilities, Travellers, Asylum Seekers & Autism Friendly – possible OCN accredited training for professionals and community reps.
Language Empowerment for Newcomer Communities Programme wILL provide essential English language skills to help people from newcomer communities to integrate based upon the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Cultural and Identity Awareness Programme Programme will examine ways in which challenging issues such as flags, symbols, bonfires etc can be addressed through dialogue and learning.
Club and Schools Sports Connection Project Project would be designed to bring together male and female members from local GAA, Hockey, Soccer and Rugby clubs and teams/students from post primary schools (expansion on Stick with Diversity Project).
Schools and Communities Interpretive Arts Project The project will develop and create installation of art works created by primary and secondary pupils from across communities.
Enhancing Culture, Heritage, and Community Identity within the ABC Place Plans Incorporate culture, heritage and community identity elements to developed Place Plans for a minimum of three locations.

PEACEPLUS Partnership

The Local PEACEPLUS Partnership was established in November 2023. It has responsibility for the development and delivery of the Co-Designed Local Community Action Plan. The Partnership comprises of elected members from Council, representatives from some statutory bodies and a cross-section of representation from our communities. The Partnership is co-chaired by Cllr Kevin Savage and Donna Stewart.
