The ‘Baton of Hope’, the biggest suicide prevention and mental health initiative, will visit local towns in the borough on Wednesday 3 September 2025.
This powerful event will see the Baton of Hope visit Keady and Banbridge and local communities are invited to line the streets and take part in a day of awareness, remembrance and hope.
The initiative is supported by PIPS Hope and Support, Public Health Agency, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and Give Inc and aims to raise awareness of suicide prevention, promote mental health support and encourage open conversations within communities.
Speaking about the Baton of Hope, Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Jessica Johnston said:
“Suicide affects far too many families across our borough, and the Baton of Hope is a powerful symbol that together we can tackle stigma and promote hope. I would encourage everyone in Keady and Banbridge to come out, support the initiative, and join us in standing together for suicide prevention and mental well-being.”
The Keady event kicks off with a coffee morning at the TMAC Centre at 10:00am before welcoming the Baton following a procession through Keady, commencing at St Patrick’s High School at 11:00am. A range of organisations will be on hand providing support and advice on mental health and well-being programmes and services. There will also be a tree planting ceremony to symbolise hope and renewal.
In Banbridge a host of activities, including sports, a petting zoo, face-painting and support services information stands will be available at Havelock Park from 2:00pm-6:00pm. The Baton will arrive at Downshire Roundabout at 4:00pm for a community walk through the town.
The Baton will also visit other towns including Crossmaglen, Cullyhanna, Camlough, Bessbrook, Kilkeel, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint and Newry.
Everyone is encouraged to take part, show support and stand together.
