Fun runners and athletes of all abilities are being encouraged to lace up their trainers and register for the free Virtual ABC 10k Run.

The virtual run which is being organised in place of the annual Craigavon Lakes 10k race is being organised by Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and supported by Banbridge Athletics Club and Armagh Athletics Club.

Participants will have between 19 – 27 June 2021 to complete their 10k run using a route of their choice which is safe and suitable for walking or running.

For many of our current 5km – 10km participants this run will be the culmination of a 10-week training programme which sees them achieve their 10km run – certainly no mean feat!

Participants who complete the 10km run between 19 – 27 June and who submit evidence of their run will be eligible to receive a medal which will be posted to their home address. There are also a number of spot prizes for participants available including vouchers from GetActiveABC, Café IncreadABLE at South Lake Leisure Centre and Rushmere Shopping Centre.

Spot prize catagories include:

  • Best family involvement photo – a photo showing full family involvement in the 10k run
  • Most creative DIY finish line photo – a photo showing your own creative finish line to celebrate the 10k run in style
  • Showcasing the ‘Best of the Borough’ photo – a photo showing the participant making use of the Borough’s fantastic parks or open spaces for the 10k run

Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, Councillor Kevin Savage commented: “I am delighted to launch the Virtual ABC 10k Run organised by Council and supported by Banbridge and Armagh Athletics Clubs. The event is open to all, whether you are a walker, jogger or runner and is a great opportunity to get back out again and test yourself at this challenging yet achievable distance.

For our 50 runners taking part in the Council 5km – 10km running programme, this will be the culmination of their 10 week training programme which has seen them dedicating themselves to 3 runs per week, rain hail or shine, that alone deserves congratulations!

I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up and keep fit while having fun, and don’t forget to send in your photos to be in with a chance of winning one of our superb spot prizes, it’s time to get creative and get involved.”

As with many activity challenges of this type many participants use the opportunity to raise money for a charity of their choice which is a fantastic incentive to help push you along as you pound the pavement.

One such initiative the council are promoting is the Go East for India fundraising campaign which aims to help raise money for Oxfam to supply much needed Covid-19 aid and assistance for the people of India.

The council have organised a series of fundraising challenges calling on local residents, businesses and council employees to walk, run, cycle and paddle the 4,812 miles from Craigavon to Chennai in India.

Participants in the Virtual ABC 10k Run who would like to use this opportunity to raise money and donate to this very worthy cause can do so by clicking the following link.
