Falkland Islands to Banbridge

The Falkland Islands have a close connection with Captain Crozier from Banbridge who was captain of the ship “Terror” which overwintered in the Islands in 1842 (with James Clark Ross in Erebus).

Captain Crozier helped choose the site for the town of Stanley which then became the Island’s capital.

The Museum in Stanley ( https://falklands-museum.com) runs an a really popular, youth group called PAST FINDERS where young people learn more about their Island’s history through a series of field -based activities.

Earlier this year they ran a competition based around the famous (Irish) explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, the winners of which would go on a trip to the UK and Ireland to visit sites with Falklands connections (including the Shackleton Museum in Athy, Co Kildare).

This is the biggest competition ever run by the group and they are particularly delighted to be able to come to Northern Ireland to see Captain Crozier’s statue, house and homeland at Banbridge.

The Lord Mayor, Alderman Stephen Moutray was delighted to welcome to Banbridge the four young competition winners from the Falkland Islands who won a trip to the UK and Ireland through the Falklands Museum in Stanley.

The group were able to visit the Crozier Memorial in Banbridge, visit Seapatrick Parish Church, and were treated to lunch in the Civic Building before heading on a visit to the Game of Thrones Studios.
