In a year when the local Art Club in Armagh celebrated its 61st year, an impressive entry of 60 paintings has been submitted for the annual winter exhibition at Armagh County Museum.  This year’s judge, Christine Donnelly, Creative Programming Development Officer from the Market Place Theatre, congratulated participants at the recent opening, for their years of hard work in making this exhibition a huge success.

Sarah Millsopp, the museum’s manager, welcomed the fantastic exhibition. “We are delighted to be working with Armagh Art Club once again to showcase outstanding local talent. The Art Club have created an enduring legacy by encouraging an interest in painting in the sixty-one years since the Art club was founded, and long may their association with the Museum continue.”

The winners were announced by this year’s judge Christine who concluded the annual prize giving saying:

“This is a wonderful collective exhibition of 60 artworks by members of Armagh Art Club on display for their winter showcase at Armagh County Museum. The artists have produced a range of eclectic artworks in their chosen medium. Beautiful works in acrylic, oil, ink, watercolour and mixed media are all represented, with impressive entries in landscape painting, nature, portrait, still life and contemporary design categories. A very high standard of acrylic paintings and watercolours are on show with some really exciting creative expression in the abstract paintings.”

She continued,

“I am sure that many judges say this, but it was genuinely difficult for me to make a decision on the prize winners because of the very high standard. In terms of the overall winner of the Summer Island Cup, I have chosen No 24, Townscape by Victor Kelly. Congratulations!”

Seamus McCann picked up the Jackie Connolly Cup for best portrait. ‘Uncle Tomas’. As regards the  two highly commended works, they were awarded this year to No 26, City of Lights by Kate Boylan and No 28, 3 Little Birds by Meg.
