This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion, a charity which has been providing financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants since 1921.

To mark this historic occasion Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Kyle Savage, is inviting the borough’s younger citizens to celebrate the work of the RBL by launching a special 100th Year Anniversary Poetry Competition.

The competition is open to anyone residing in the borough up to 18 years of age with two different age categories. Primary pupils in year 1 – 7 are invited to get creative and produce a poem on the theme of ‘The Poppy’ and those in Years 8 – 14 are asked to create a piece of work based on “What the RBL means to me”.

All poems will be independently judged with the winner of each category receiving a £50 prize. One overall winner will also pick up a fabulous £100 prize and will be invited to recite their poem at an official event in May, Covid restrictions permitting.

Speaking at the launch of the competition Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Kyle Savage said: “ I am delighted to announce this Royal British Legion 100th Anniversary Poetry Competition.  I’m inviting all our young poets to put pen to paper or click on their keyboard and create a wonderful piece of poetry to celebrate all that the Royal British Legion has done in supporting members and veterans of the Armed Forces and their families throughout the years. This is a great way to commemorate the history of the RBL and also helps our younger generation become aware of all the support the charity provides our service personnel past and present.”
