Taking a few simple steps and a few moments to consider potential hazards, are the key messages for this year’s Falls Prevention Awareness Week 2026.
The Home Safety team at Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council is urging older residents and people of all ages to heed the advice, identify potential dangers in their homes and avoid the potentially serious injuries caused by falls.
To mark Falls Prevention Awareness Week 2026 (Sept 21 – Sept 25), ABC Council and the Public Health Agency are encouraging anyone over 65, or those with mobility issues, to request a free home safety assessment which will help to identify factors that can increase the risk of falls and provide advice on actions that can be taken to reduce this risk.
According to the Chief Medical Officer’s, Health Intelligence briefing 2024, falls were the major single cause of unintentional deaths, accounting for 2,279 deaths in Northern Ireland between 2011 and 2020. Falls are also the single biggest cause of accidental injuries in the home, with 80% of hospital admissions resulting from accidents among people aged over 65 caused by a fall.
There are some simple, small changes and tips that can make all the difference in avoiding falls, including:
- Get up from your chair or bed slowly to avoid dizziness and use a walking aid if one has been provided.
- Keep your stairs clutter free – don’t leave items lying on the stairs that could cause a trip or fall.
- Ensure your home is well lit, and always put lights on at night, especially when getting up during the night.
- Remove loose or worn mats and rugs.
- Avoid trailing leads and wires.
- Wear well-fitting shoes or slippers, with laces or Velcro fastenings.
- Install grab rails in the bathroom or handrails on stairs for additional support.
The Home Safety Officer can provide information and advice on simple ways to prevent accidents in the home. Referrals can also be made on your behalf to other agencies to assist you, including NI Fire and Rescue Service who can fit free smoke alarms, the Housing Executive for housing related issues and repairs, and Occupational Therapy for those at risk of falls.
