Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is delighted to announce Jonathan Hackett as the selected artist for its new Artist in Residence Programme.
Based at The Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre, Jonathan is undertaking a 12-month residency, providing him with the opportunity to further develop his creative practice while working collaboratively with schools, community groups and individuals through a diverse programme of arts activities across the borough.
Welcoming the appointment, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Mary O’Dowd, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Jonathan Hackett as our Artist in Residence. This residency represents a valuable opportunity to support local artistic talent while bringing creative experiences directly into communities across our borough. Through this programme, we hope to inspire participation, encourage creativity and share the many benefits of engagement with the arts.”
As the Artist in Residence, Jonathan will receive financial and technical support, including access to professional facilities and dedicated studio space in The Market Place Theatre, Armagh. Jonathan will work with three community groups and three schools across the borough during his residency. Each group will have the opportunity to learn from Jonathan’s skills through 6-week engagement programmes. A particular focus on engaging rural communities and those outside the borough’s main population centres, helping to ensure that high-quality arts opportunities are accessible to all.
Jonathan Hackett is an Armagh-based artist, illustrator and storyteller whose work draws inspiration from Irish mythology, folklore and cultural heritage. Through bold digital illustration and contemporary storytelling, he reinterprets traditional narratives, creating work that connects people with culture, creativity and the evolving possibilities of visual art. Jonathan is passionate about fostering meaningful connections between people, culture and creativity, while exploring new ways of engaging audiences through visual art.

My practice is rooted in storytelling and connection, and I look forward to collaborating with people of all ages to explore creativity, share experiences and create meaningful artistic opportunities together. I hope the programme will encourage people to engage with the arts in new ways and discover their own creative potential.”
The Artist in Residence Programme reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting professional artists and expanding access to arts and culture across the borough, creating lasting benefits for both participants and communities.
