Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, alongside local elected representatives, visited the F.E. McWilliam Gallery & Studio for a special site visit, marking a key milestone in the ongoing construction works.
The visit offered an opportunity to gain insight into the transformative impact this major expansion will have on the wider community, as well as to hear more about the Council’s strategic vision for the gallery ahead of its completion in autumn 2026.
With the project in the final phase, attendees were able to see first-hand the significant progress made to date.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, Councillor Mary O’Dowd, said:
“It is fantastic to see the significant progress being made on this major construction project at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery & Studio. This investment demonstrates our commitment to enhancing cultural infrastructure across the Borough, creating a high-quality, accessible and inclusive space for residents and visitors. Once complete, this expanded facility will provide greater opportunities for learning, creativity and engagement, further strengthening the Gallery’s role as a key cultural destination.”
The project will see the facility double in size, delivering a range of enhancements including a new collection gallery to showcase more of F.E. McWilliam’s nationally significant artwork, a large education and community space, expanded storage, an extended shop, café and tourism information area, a Changing Places facility, a larger car park, and two new multi-purpose rooms for programming and hire.
Architects Hall Black Douglas, alongside contractors McKelvey Construction and exhibition designers Nick Hall Architects, are delivering the extension works.
ABC Council express their gratitude to the funders involved, UK Government, The Wolfson Foundation and Northern Ireland Museums Council. The Council is also contributing towards the project, helping to deliver modern amenities and ensuring the gallery continues to grow as a leading cultural destination.
The gallery remains open and accessible throughout much of the construction period. It is currently hosting an exhibition by local artists, Shore Collective, Threads of Time: Industry, Ecology, and the River Bann, alongside an exciting programme of summer workshops.
