The Class of 2026 from Donard School has been taking part in an exciting and inclusive programme delivered in partnership with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council.

Through this initiative, pupils have been introduced to the gym facilities at Banbridge Leisure Centre, giving young people with special educational needs the opportunity to experience a range of physical activities in a supportive environment.

The programme, established by the Special School Partnership, aims to build confidence and independence, promote wellbeing and highlight accessible leisure opportunities, helping young people develop skills they can carry into everyday life while encouraging continued participation in community activities.

Speaking about the leisure initiative, Lord Mayor Councillor Mary O’Dowd said: “This programme has been a wonderful experience with far-reaching benefits for everyone involved. It’s a heart-warming example of how accessible and inclusive services and facilities can give everyone the opportunity to thrive through physical activity.”

The programme started with 2 weeks of in-school delivery, facilitated by the ABC Disability Sport NI Inclusive Sport and Leisure Officer, followed by 6 weeks in the gym at Banbridge Leisure Centre, working with the fitness instructors to become confident in the use of the equipment and independent in following an exercise programme.

In the final session, parents and carers joined the students for a dedicated gym induction. This session equipped families with the knowledge and confidence to support the young people, enabling them to attend the leisure centre independently or with assistance and continue their fitness journey beyond school.

Building on the programme’s success, ABC Council and Donard School will continue to work in partnership to further develop physical activity opportunities for children with additional needs.
