The pupils of St Patrick’s Primary School in Armagh have turned up the heat in the battle against litter, by joining the Adopt a Street scheme.

As part of the environmental initiative, the pupils have been carrying our regular litter picks along parts of the Loughgall Road and St Brigid’s Hill in the city.

The Adopt a Street scheme – which is organised by Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon (ABC) Borough Council – delivers support to local residents, schools and businesses who wish to commit to look after a specific area which they ‘adopt’ and keep clean and tidy and free from litter.

All those taking part help make a difference to the local area and encourage a community spirit. Equipment is provided and ongoing support is given to those who register for the scheme.

A spokesperson for ABC Council said they hoped the work of St Patrick’s pupils would inspire more people to get involved. “Congratulations to the pupils and staff of St Patrick’s on signing up to the Adopt a Street scheme and the positive contribution they are making to their local community and environment,” they said.

“With the support of residents who take positive action to keep local streets litter free, we can tackle this harmful and unsightly problem together and help provide a cleaner environment for all to enjoy.”

Litter, especially plastic and organic waste, impedes natural processes like the ocean’s ability to absorb CO2, as well as contaminating soil and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide, which intensify climate change through production, decomposition, and clean-up processes.
