Over 40 girls from primary schools across the borough are on a mission to inspire their peers to lead healthier, more active lives through the ‘Girls Active’ initiative.
The girls from seven different primary schools joined forces at this week’s Girls Active Primary Inspiration Day at Dromore Community Centre. Through interactive workshops and activities, the girls learned about leadership, marketing and planning to support their mission to get more girls active.
Speaking at the event, Lord Mayor Alderman Stephen Moutray said: “Initiatives such as Girls Active are so important to ensure girls are actively engaged with the design and delivery of activities that will lead to improved opportunities that appeal to all girls. I congratulate everyone involved and wish all the girls every success in their roles as Girls Active Leaders.”
‘Girls Active’ is an initiative developed by the Youth Sport Trust, in partnership with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. The programme encourages pupils and teachers to work together to get more girls involved in PE, sport and physical activity through positive leadership and engagement in schools.
Irish Olympian Shirley McCay attended the event and shared her personal journey through the highs and lows of elite sport to the proudest moments of her career – representing Ireland at the Olympic Games.
