Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough (ABC) Council donates £2,000 to Oxfam India Covid-19 Appeal following its recent ‘Go East For India’ fundraising campaign.

Led by ABC Council to support the people of India during the country’s devastating Covid-19 crisis, the fundraising campaign saw local residents, businesses, council staff and councillors run, cycle and paddle to help raise vital funds for the Oxfam India Covid-19 Appeal.

The calorie-busting fundraising initiative included everything from instructor-led spin classes, a biathlon, involving running and kayaking at Craigavon Lakes to a day-long spin-a-thon – and saw donations continue to roll in until the end of July.

Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Alderman Glenn Barr said:

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that got behind this very worthy cause – whether you saddled up on a spin bike, cheered ones on at the side line or donated, it is all greatly appreciated! This is a fantastic sum of money raised and it will go a long way in helping support the Oxfam India Covid-19 Appeal and the charity’s ongoing response to the crisis in India.”

Funds raised will help support the Oxfam India Covid-19 Appeal and the charity’s aims to distribute PPE and medical equipment to hospitals and health centres, provide food and cash to the most vulnerable, as well as remove the barriers to increasing vaccine production and ensure access for everyone.

Aisling Wallace, Corporate and Events Manager for Oxfam Ireland said:

“On behalf of everyone at Oxfam Ireland, I would like to thank ABC Council for your donation to our India Covid Appeal. Please know that your gift will have a huge impact, allowing us to provide emergency support and helping to ensure that the People of India receive the help they so desperately need.”

In 2017, council established a long-standing association with India through the launch of the ‘Export to India – Go East Programme’. This programme enabled businesses from across the borough to take part in a trade mission to India, establishing many positive business partnerships, particularly in the Chennai region.
