Over 600 budding athletes from across the Borough and beyond donned their running shoes for the annual Craigavon Lakes 10km Race and Fun Run which took place recently.

Organised by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and supported by Craigavon Sports Advisory Council (CSAC), the race and fun run started and finished at Craigavon Watersports Centre and took in the pathways around the Craigavon Lakes and City Parks areas.

Seasoned runners and novices alike participated in either the 10 kilometre or 5 kilometre races with many families also taking part in the 1 kilometre family challenge. Conditions on the evening were warm and sunny which attracted a large number of spectators to enjoy the evening’s events. The charity for the event was the British Heart Foundation Mending Broken Hearts Appeal.

The winners were as follows:

10k male winner: Martin Melville with a time of 34.11

10k male 2nd place: Stephen O’Gorman with a time of 34.38

10k male 3rd place: John Craig with a time of 34.50

10k female winner: Heather Foley with a time of 36.45

10k female 2nd place: Rebecca Henderson with a time of 38.46

10 female 3rd place: Laura Bickerstaff with a time of 39.30

5k male winner:  Noel Gallagher with a time of 18.56

5k female winner: Emma Mulholland with a time of 20.22

“The annual 10k is always a fantastic event and this year exceeded all expectations with over 600 people taking part in the various races,” commented the Deputy Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Brendan Curran.

“This hugely successful event shows how the sport of running is now more popular than ever and it was great to see so many families attending with their young children too. I was delighted to be there on the night to hand out the prizes and congratulate all winners.”

The sponsor for the event this year was Intersport House of Sport in Lurgan who also provided goody bags for all competitors.
