Popular tow path undergoing repairs next week

Last year, around 130,000 people used the Portadown area of the Newry to Portadown Canal towpath, making it an extremely popular attraction for pedestrians and cyclists alike. However, as with all paths seeing heavy usage, the tow path now needs some maintenance to ensure it is kept in excellent condition for those using it on a regular basis.

In recent weeks, some cracks have appeared on the surface of the path, so Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council are taking action to ensure these problem areas are fixed as soon as possible to create a safer and more even surface for all users.

Two areas are being targeted – one near Moneypenny’s Lockhouse and the other at the Sluicekeeper’s Cottage at Acton. A contractor has been appointed and the repair work is expected to take place week beginning 21st November, weather permitting, and will take approximately two days at each location.

During the work, the towpath may have to close for short periods and there may be some disruption for towpath users however, this will be kept to a minimum.

For more information on exact days the work will be taking place please contact 02838311668.

Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but look forward to seeing the new, improved and safer paths in place.
