When planning that special Valentine’s date, Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s Environmental Health Department would like to remind you to ‘look before you book.’
Planning the perfect Valentine’s date is stressful enough. There’s plenty to worry about, the last thing you want on your mind before that special date is whether the place you choose is hygienic or not. There’s nothing romantic about food poisoning.
You can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy their staff look or by how romantic the ambience is. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme can take one worry off your mind.
Following an inspection carried out by the Council’s Environmental Health Officers, the hygiene standards found at the time are assessed and the food business is given a rating. At the bottom of the scale is ‘0’ – this means urgent improvement is necessary. At the top of the scale is ‘5’ – this means the hygiene standards are very good.
With 99.5% of businesses in the borough with a rating of 3 or above, you will have plenty to choose from whether you’re reserving a table at that romantic hotspot, the cosy little café, or planning on ordering a takeaway on your way home.
It’s really easy to check. Just go online to the Food Standard Agency’s website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker.
If the business is not displaying a rating or you are concerned about the hygiene standards of any food business in the borough, you can contact the Environmental Health Department on 0300 0300 900 or online at
