Local athletes journey to Australia to compete in the Commonwealth Games!

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are now less than two weeks away and six athletes from the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon borough have arrived in Australia to prepare for the competition!

Our local athletes recently attended a pre-games dinner for Northern Ireland athletes and support staff – including Robert McVeigh, Chef de Mission, Commonwealth Games Committee -before packing their bags and heading to Australia.

Catherine Beattie will compete in Lawn Bowls, David Kerr in the Para Triathlon along with Andrea Nash, Mark Downey in Cycling, Emma Mitchell in Athletics and Russell White in the Triathlon.

“The sporting talent in our borough is absolutely outstanding and this is demonstrated once again with the remarkable athletes who will be competing in the Commonwealth Games,” commented the Lord Mayor, Alderman Gareth Wilson.

“On behalf of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council I would like to wish them all the very best as they take on the challenges of their sport in Australia and hope they have an exciting, memorable and successful experience.”

The Games will take place from 4th April to 15th April.
