Borough welcomes launch of new sports bursary

A new sports bursary for junior and senior athletes has been launched by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council in partnership with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Sports Forum.

Launched this week, the bursary is designed to support and facilitate the development of the borough’s rising sporting stars who have the ability and potential to bring sporting success to the region at provincial level or higher.

Welcoming the introduction of the bursary to the borough, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Julie Flaherty, said,

“We are a proud sporting borough, made up of extremely talented, dedicated and determined athletes, which is why I am so thrilled to see council and the sports forum launch this sports bursary.

“This scheme offers a great boost of support to help our aspiring performers in their pursuit of achieving sporting success and I wish them the very best of luck in all their future training and competitions.”

The scheme is open to those who are competing beyond the Sports Forum’s criteria for a talented athlete grant and whose standing indicates potential to compete at international level or with distinction in British and Irish Championships.

Extending her delight Edith Jamison Chairperson of the Sports Forum commented,

“The Sports Forum is delighted to launch this bursary. There are many outstanding talented young athletes within the borough, with proven ability to compete right up to European level and on the world stage.”

“The aim of the bursary is to assist these aspiring young athletes in reaching their full potential. I am incredibly proud of their achievements and I wish them every success in the future.”

With three award levels available namely, development, top up and ambassador, the bursary will support competitors of proven ability at both junior and senior levels.

Due to financial limitation, not all individuals who meet the set criteria will receive awards.
