Council has secured £5,469,045 for the Shared Process and Community Engagement Project (SPACE) from the Special European Programmes Body (SEUPB) Peace III Priority 2 Contributing to a Shared Society Theme 1 Creating Shared Public Services to refurbish Portadown Peoples Park and Tunnel Area.
The SPACE Project has two main strands; the capital refurbishment of the park and the community engagement programme. The capital element involves the construction of an amphitheatre, new play areas, pavilion building, synthetic pitches, themed gardens, and an upgrade to the existing pitches and overall the park will be enhanced through new planting. There will also be enhancement works to the tunnel as this location acts as a main arrivals point for visitors arriving from train in addition to being a key access route for the local residents to get to the town centre.
The community engagement programme involves provision of a peace building programme, responding to community need and sensitive issues, delivery of an events programme and developing and implementing a vibrant informative communication and publicity programme.
Both elements of this project must be completed by June 2015 and it is anticipated that both the capital works and community engagement will encourage the transformation of the Peoples Park and Tunnel into a welcoming and iconic space with improved accessibility and facilities and programming of projects and events which will establish the park and tunnel area as a place of note at both local and regional level.
This project is supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.
