Dog Pound

Dog Pound Armagh

The Dog Pound looks after lost or stray dogs. It is our job to keep the dogs safe until their owner contacts us or if necessary, find the dogs a new home. Dog Control Service is part of the Environmental Health Department of the Council, at the Palace Demesne off the Friary Road, Armagh.

The information on this page is pulled from our Facebook Wall.  This is where we will post information about lost or stolen dogs and dogs who need a new home. The pound contains 10 pens, which are block built with galvanised dog runs with fresh water drinking systems. The Council’s Dog Control Service responds to calls from members of the public to collect stray dogs within the Council area and impound them in the Pound, the service is also used to handle owners requests for residents who no longer want the dog (fees apply). To report a lost or stolen dog, call us on 028 3752 9623,  post a message on our Facebook Wall. We can then check if the dog has been picked up by our Dog Warden.

Adoptable Dog Pairs, Irelandthese terriers were shared to our page. It appears there has been considerable interest in them, but are any people offering to rehome 3 or 2 of them together? Do they get on well together? Maybe if new adoption requests are made to take the terriers together pound admin would consider those applications?4 days ago

Patricia FullertonWhy do the public need to be told, on a poster, to pick up after their dog, to carry doggie bags and gladly give others a bag. ??? Surely it is manners, common sense and personal responsibility. A no brainer! The government is, once again, enabling the public not to think for for themselves and take responsibility.4 weeks ago

Spotted this from our neighbours in Monaghan – certainly worth watching. Well done Monaghan County Council on a great production.

Dog’s can’t clean up after themselves!

Monaghan County Council wants to encourage more responsible dog ownership in County Monaghan this May.
When not cleaned up dog fouling can become a serious threat to our health and is also a nuisance and hazard to wheelchair users and parents out with their children in buggies and prams.

Clodagh Raleighwish they managed to run the Monaghan Dog pound in a better way than it is currently run. It is run by a rescue that threaten the dogs are unsafe if not homed by 4pm on such a date, which is resulting in dogs being taken out and given away for free to save them. Expect a bit more from a rescue run pound…..i have phone the council about this and they appear to not give a damn…the vet told me in a laughing manner that they are getting 70e per dog. SHEEP ATTACKS AND SHEEP WORRYING

Sheep attacks and sheep worrying is a major issue for farmers especially during the lambing season (December to May).

Sheep worrying occurs when dogs chase sheep, injure them and/or kill them. Sheep are flight animals i.e. they flee/run when they perceive danger. The above causes economic losses and makes for a difficult working environment for the farmer.

Even though dogs have been domesticated for a long time, they have not lost their basic instincts. These instincts include a strong predatory drive. The chase instinct can be triggered by the sight of or the movement of animals. Thus humans should not be shocked that the family pet dog would chase or attack/worry sheep. If your family pet dog is out of your sight/control for even a short time, i.e.10 minutes at any time of the day, it could become involved in sheep attacks. Any breed of dog if given the opportunity can be involved in a sheep attack/worrying/killing episode.

In this the Lambing Season, extra vigilance is required by dog owners – be you a rural dweller or if you walk your dog in the countryside, give some consideration to sheep farmers and the welfare of their sheep. Any dog including family pets can become involved in a sheep kill if we (humans) give them the opportunity. The Dog owner is liable for any damages arising.

Dogs must be kept under control at all times preferably on a lead. In certain circumstances it is legal for farmers to shoot dogs on sight if they are trespassing their lands. So be warned!

Dog owners are also reminded that your dog must be licensed and micro-chipped. A fixed penalty of £80 can be served for a dog with no license and for a dog straying.
